Not Another RC post

As some of you are aware, I don’t have any posts about RC 13. RollerCon 2013 as it were for the new to derby. Not because I had an überawesome time and was too busy to post a single blurb. I just didn’t go.  What happened that I missed a week’s worth of the second most awesome thing to happen in the world every year?

(sorry RC playoffs and nationals err championship take the cake) Work. that’s what happened.
But like I mentioned this isn’t another RC post. This is about the debut bout of Yellow Rose Derby Girls, of Southwest Houston

and the wonderful hosts Spindeltop Rollergirls. Best of all I got to work again with Fairlane. He’s one of the  referees that I try to emulate.

Yellow Rose got to be the first team to play at Spindletop’s new venue, Beaumont Civic Center which I personally like better than Ford Arena for several reasons.  The biggest is that there is NOT a huge pillar in the center of the track blocking the view of fans and refs.  Something worth mentioning is that this was the fastest bout I have ever reffed. Only three official time outs, which were to correct a scoreboard malfunction. Not a single team timeout.  I think from first whistle to the time I was geared down post bout was and hour and forty minutes.

Although as a ref, what makes every bout a success is no injuries. Our primary role as a ref is to ensure the safety of the skaters and impartial enforcement of the rules.

I was glad to see my home team, Yellow Rose Derby Girls come together as a unit, find their groove and cohesiveness and almost triple their first half score. I was also quite happy to see the few old friends I still have left at Spindletop, too many new faces, but that’s happening in almost every league now. Plus I’ve been sort of out of the loop for about eight months.  it’s great to be able to feel right at home like I’d only been gone a week.

Spindle topples Charmed Forces

Amazing game, the score might not reflect it however, Charmed Forces played their hearts out. Sadly the polished concrete took nearly every ounce of their effort. Spindletop came out on top by a lil over 200 points. The biggest issue, aside from the slick concrete, was the injuries SARD had, MarmaJuke had a knee issue a few mins into the first half and sat out the rest of the bout. Beyona Rampage got her bell rung a few mins later but came back after the half.. I think. Punky Jukester broke her finger just before the half.

As for spindletop Photo Finish doubled over and touched the right side of her hip with her left ear… Think about it. It looked painful and I pray she majes a speedy recovery.

To my knowledge the injuries that the skaters got werent serious, in that no ambulance carted them off. It was fast paced and one of those bouts you realize its over before you realize it.

I must say this ref crew worked like a well oiled machine, though skaters & coaches might not agree. Frog-Her & Cell Warrior have come quite a long way in a short time, all thanks to Fairlane. He’s like a Mr. Miyagi of Zebra teaching. Major Hawkeye is very humble unlike the perception of a cocky ref, a story was related to me after the afterparty that cemented the idea that Hawkeye’s a ref who’ll work your you need him, unlike prima donnas who’ll only work wherethey want. They all worked the inside with Cell Warrior & Hawkeye jam reffin. Krez Sez, PBJ & myself were on the outside. We kept eyes on front & back about 95% of the bout. I cant think of a better group, not that there arent other good refs, just that this group can find a groove and work like an oiled machine by jam 3.

I did have a SNAFU with not calling a poodle timely but otherwise we oficiated a great game.

Spindletop season opener

April 14, 2012

First score keeping job of the year. Double header tonight and it’s gonna be a fun night. Great to see old familiar faces among skaters, NSOs and officials. Derby ❤ is strong here, Rubi is loving with her gracious smile and Snickers is a laugh a minute with her dry wit. I’m not used to sitting down during a bout so this is gonna be an interesting night being score keeper. The setup for tonight is different from last year, where the scoreboard, lineup and announcers were at the the straightaway between turn 4 & 1. This year it’s at turn 4, which used to be turn 2. It’s a better vantage point for the NSOs to watch whats going on.

Tonight’s first bout is between Red Stick Roller Derby and Spindletop Roller Derby. Already I see a fan favorite Glock Strap, Turbo Tyke. Sadly Rock Bottom didn’t make it out here. Moxie Balboa & Jams P Sullivan are Beasts! They jammed pretty much all night, Lil Miss Maggot gave them some relief in jam 16, and TKO spent jams 12-14 in the box, due to a misunderstanding in being released. In the second period Maggot got into the rotation in the 7th jam with Jams P. Sullivan. Tank goodness fouled out in jam 18. Glock Strap is quite an effective B3 sweeper and B1 commanding the red wall.

Spindletop managed to figure out how to break out of the wall of red in the second half and rallied the crowd and doubled their points from the first half at 36 to end it 92-138 Red Stick. Emma Propriate, Foto Finish, AndyConDuh and Choctaw did did most of the jam rotations. Bootylicious & Ravoltin’ Rambo were knocking’ red jammers out left n right as best they could & succeeded more often than not, but red was resilient. All in all it was a great action packed first game and I can’t wait for bout #2 to get started.
